The Institute · Our Purpose
Evidence in the service of the Republic
AFPR is an independent, not-for-profit institute of research and education. Its work is patient, sourced and open to argument, in the service of better public decisions in India and beyond.
Our work
Six centres of study range across governance and the economy, the Constitution and electoral reform, international relations and strategy, social equity, the environment and the media, with data at the core of each. We publish commentary, policy reports and a monthly journal; we prepare the next generation of researchers through the Academy, fellowships and internships; and we take our findings to the ground through community engagement.
Three flagships carry that work to wider audiences: The Democratic Line, our monthly journal; the Puri Literary Festival, which AFPR presents; and AFPR Publishing House.
Our discipline
We begin with evidence and end with a recommendation. Every claim we publish is sourced, every figure checked, and every proposal written for the people who must act upon it. We hold that durable change in a democracy comes through its institutions, and we work to strengthen them rather than to bypass them.
Our counsel
The institute is governed by a Board of Directors and counselled by a Board of Advisors whose members include the Director General of the Centre for Land Warfare Studies, a Designated Senior Advocate of the High Court at Lucknow, an Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India, senior officers of the Indian Army, and professors and scholars across the disciplines. Their experience informs the questions we ask, and the standards to which we hold our answers. Meet our leadership and counsel.
